“In the beginning, genre cinema didn’t much interest me; I started out more from my own memories. When I was a child in our country house in Normandy, I would encounter characters that fascinated me – the crazy woman from the village, the good-looking homeless boy who hung around…”
I was probably a troubled little girl, projecting my somewhat dark thoughts onto my surroundings. And then I mixed what I had experienced with my fantasies. Movies don’t interest me if there’s no tension, and so I couldn’t write a purely psychological story, but yes, basically it’s about being a mother...
As for the mixing of genres, I think we also strove for a more visual approach in the revision. The story hasn’t changed, but we’ve given more importance to the fantastic aspect, the ominous nights and the lights of childhood."
