“This film has a direct connection with my own family story. […] My brother, who was ‘different’ and therefore faced a lot of rejection from his surroundings, died very suddenly.
I wanted to transcend my grief, my anger, and my helplessness... William [Martin] and I have known each other since our school days in Annecy; we essentially grew up together and developed together. So I spontaneously spoke to him about the idea. He immediately explained to me that it would be impossible to portray the theme realistically. And then […] suddenly the idea came to me to approach it through the figure of the vampire. This was not coincidental. As a child, my brother told us that vampires would come to talk to him every night. After an initial shock, he gradually developed a passion for these creatures who, like himself, are fundamentally condemned to live in the shadows. He then watched all vampire movies. I immediately realized that I could gain the necessary distance from my personal story by portraying my young hero, Philemon, as a vampire.”
