The film tells the disturbing story of a shy, naive printer, Henry Spencer – he lives in a bleak industrial district, where nature has been totally displaced and only the electric hum of machines punctuates the silence. From his ex-girlfriend Mary’s parents he learns that she has given birth to their baby after an extremely short pregnancy. She moves in with him along with the newborn, grotesquely deformed baby, and both begin to care for the misshapen child together. But Mary cannot cope with the strain for long and leaves Henry alone with the screaming baby. When the child falls ill, Henry’s mental state begins to deteriorate. Dream and reality blur, and Henry is haunted by surreal visions – until, in his anguish, he makes a fatal decision.
