With the theatrical release of Johannes Preuss & Marius Brüning's MY STRANGE HOMELAND (55th HOF IFF) on Thursday, 23 June 2022, we embark on a quest for belonging and happiness.

In a remote mountain village in Bolivia, he is born on the floor of a mud hut. He is the fourth child of a goat herder. His spirit for life is very weak when, a few months later, an adoptive family in Germany welcomes him into their home. José Noé Estrada becomes Manuel Phillip Sosnowski. Thirty years later, he travels back to his mother's country for the first time, where she lives in deep poverty.

The experiences of this trip raise many questions for Manuel: What if he had grown up in Bolivia... and had worked in the deadly mines like everyone else? Or was luck simply on Manuel's side? What is luck? "I carry happiness in my heart," his mother says.

"The film is a work of timeless virtuosity that sensitively tells a universal story" (Stuttgarter Zeitung), which we are happy to see (again) in the cinema.
