After the highly acclaimed world premiere of DEATH OF MY YOUTH by Timo Jacobs at the 59th Hof International Film Festival 2025 (HIFF / distribution: missingFILMs) the film will open in cinemas on Thursday, May 21, 2026, preceded by a nationwide tour starting on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The film tells the story of Kai Peter (Timo Jacobs), who returns to his hometown with his family (Nadeshda Brennicke and Silas Peter). Working as a janitor at his former school, his life initially appears stable and orderly. But encounters from the past and a visit to the former children’s home reopen long-suppressed memories. Caught between family, longing, and the hope for a new beginning, the shadows of his youth begin to resurface.
“After his quirky deadpan comedy IMPOSTORS AND PONIES (58th HIFF 2024), independent filmmaker Timo Jacobs surprises with a radical shift in genre and tone. DEATH OF MY YOUTH is a film about bullying, violence, and sexual abuse — based on a true and deeply disturbing story. Jacobs portrays the life of the real Kai Peter in a way that is both multilayered and grounded. In doing so, he finds his own raw and deeply moving cinematic language, while also exploring the artistic processing of trauma — of all places, on the comedy stage. An unpolished yet profoundly affecting film in the very best sense.” (Jochen Werner / filmstarts.de)
