NAWI – DEAR FUTURE ME in Cinemas and on Tour

    On Thursday, March 5, the multi-award-winning film and Kenya’s official Oscar entry NAWI – DEAR FUTURE ME (58th Hof International Film Festival 2024/HIFF), directed by Toby & Kevin Schmutzler, Vallentine Chelluget and Apuu Mourine, opened in cinemas in Germany (distributed by Filmperlen) as well as in North America (distributed by New Mountain Films).

    The team and cast are currently on tour. A special screening will take place on International Women’s Day, Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 11:00 a.m., at Rio Filmpalast in Munich (tickets here), attended by lead actress Michelle Lemuya Ikeny, Producer Lydia Wrensch and Executive Producer Prince Ludwig of Bavaria. The subsequent discussion will be moderated by HIFF’s Thorsten Schaumann, Artistic Director.

    The film tells the story of 13-year-old Nawi from the rural Kenyan county of Turkana, who fights against a forced marriage after her father decides to marry her off to a much older man in exchange for a bride price. Refusing to accept her fate, Nawi runs away and risks everything to pursue her dream of education and a self-determined life.
