The film is a road movie through East Germany and at the same time a journey through time, because after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, documentary filmmaker Wolfgang Ettlich made the same journey for the first time and then several times again at long intervals, meeting the same people.
The original footage from the first trip provides (un)spectacular insights into the everyday life of the people and, in contrast to the new footage, great changes become visible. Have the people’s hopes been fulfilled, were their fears justified? The conversations with the rediscovered protagonists provide information about their state of mind today.
