Trine refuses to fly. When the 18-year-old climate activist and trumpet talent is invited to an audition at the famous Opera House in Oslo, she has just a few days to travel the over 1500 kilometers from the remote Lofoten islands to the capital. Trying to stay true to her principles, Trine decides to hitchhike, relying on the kindness of strangers who will pick her up. On her road trip through Norway’s rugged and beautiful landscapes, her passion for music and her environmental idealism are put sorely to the test.

“How can our personal goals in life be reconciled with the climate crisis that threatens our future? Do we need to limit ourselves? How many of my personal choices are unavoidably political? These are questions I am faced with every day in my life and my work as a director. [...]
In my childhood, I experienced challenging periods. After a few difficult years, I started playing the trumpet [...]. Without realizing it, I began to develop something note by note, practice by practice, day by day. Consistent daily practice became a tool to reflect upon my own behavior and learn to challenge my limits.
It is precisely this tool of ‘practicing’ that gives Trine hope when everything seems to be at stake for her: her future as a musician and her principles. Trine is confronted with growing up in a time when future scenarios, norms, and hope are on the verge of collapse. Is activism perhaps the only consistent counterreaction to such an existential crisis?
Å ØVE portrays a courageous woman who remains true to herself and leaves her comfort zone repeatedly without fear of conflict. [...] Trine shows how it is possible to question one's own habits and attitudes again and again and finally to learn to listen to herself.”
