The Buntentor is a women’s project that emerged from an occupied house in Bremen at the end of the 1980s. We show how the women independently created a space of freedom for themselves but also experience how their vision of a different life was destroyed by the closure of the house. Four former residents recall this time: Angie in her trailer, Andrea in her garden plot, Esther in her Berlin office, and the transman Luke in Hamburg, who at the time lived in the Buntentor as a woman. We accompany them in their current everyday lives.

“We met in 1993 during the turbulent phase before the clearance of the Buntentor. Katrin was a resident at the women’s project, Vanessa was one of the project’s supporters and filmed during a demonstration in support of the Buntentor. That’s how DER BUNTENTORFILM was made for the Open Channel Bremen in 1994. 25 years later, we asked ourselves what had become of these women and set out to find them. How did the project influence their lives? We have been working on this film idea since 2019. […] With the help of crowdfunding, a small post-production grant from the Senator for Culture in Bremen and a dedicated team, we produced the film ourselves and were able to complete our passion project in August 2025.
