    The film is based on a true story of the famous celebrity biographer (and cat friend) Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy), who earned her living writing portraits and biographies of celebrities in New York in the 1970s and 80s. But now Lee's works are no longer published because they no longer meet the contemporary taste of the public. Out of financial need, she turned her art form to deception, instigated by her loyal friend Jack (Richard E. Grant), and was dangerously successful.
