The German Cinema New Talent Award for Best Film is endowed with 10,000 euros and awarded by Bavaria Film, Bayerischer Rundfunk and the DZ Bank. The prize is awarded to filmmakers for their first, second or third German-produced feature film with a minimum length of 79 minutes which premieres in the program of the Hof International Film Festival. The award is sponsored by Bavaria Film, Bayerischer Rundfunk, and DZ Bank. The jury, Luzie Loose (director), Katrin Schlösser (director, producer), and Johanna Wokalek (actress), has chosen the following film:
"…you have found a harmonious ensemble and, in Mariella Aumann, a strong leading actress who we also really want to see more of. Precise acting, a sense of rhythm and accuracy create a dense atmosphere.
Special mention should also be made of cinematographer Tim Kuhn's visual design. He is wonderfully character-driven, keeping close to them, drawing us into Lea's world with his images and doesn't let go until the end. His work seems intuitive and yet every decision is carefully considered.
The film creates an exciting mixture of individual fate and universality. In JUPITER, we see a family's agonizing search for help - and at the same time a statement about the complex times we live in. People can no longer explain the world around them, are overwhelmed, feel unnoticed, left alone. They cling to the easy answers. You manage to bring your characters down to eye level and make us understand through them how seducible we are.
The film leaves us with the important reminder that we must always question simple answers to complex issues!"
