In Germany and Russia, people drink the same amount of pure alcohol: ten liters per capita per year. Two Germans and two Russians are “functioning” young alcoholics. All four are trying to stop drinking. Drinking, however, is so woven into our everyday lives that we no longer even notice it: As long as we function, we drink. And as long as we drink, we function. How can we break out of this vicious circle?
“In January 2022, I finished shooting LAST ROUND. A month after I flew back from Russia, President Putin instigated the war.
The footage already contains a foreshadowing of the war: in his New Year’s Eve speech for the coming year 2021, Putin says: ‘We will master the tasks that await Russia in this third decade of the 21st century.’ The protagonist’s ten-year-old son takes the oath to join the cadet corps. When the protagonists talk about their vacations, they tell how 30 years ago they used to go to Odessa in the summer and now they want to go to Crimea. In the end, they go to Abkhazia: the part of Georgia that has been under Russian ‘protectorate’ since 1994. That’s what I appreciated about the film – besides the fates of the alcoholics, it tells about everyday life and the society around them. And there’s a lot to observe, both in Germany and in Russia.”
