Hans Vogt Award of the city of Rehau 2024

Since 2012, the HANS VOGT AWARD has been awarded by the city of Rehau as part of the Hof International Film Festival. Thanks to the support of our sponsors, we are delighted to be able to present this award again in 2024. The prize, endowed with €5,000, is aimed at filmmakers who have given their works special quality and value through innovation and care, paying particular attention to sound and music in their films. The Hans Vogt Award commemorates the pioneering work of engineer Hans Vogt, born in 1890 in the Wurlitz district of Rehau, who played a decisive role in the invention of sound film and ushered in a new era in the history of cinema.

This year, the prize goes to the musician and composer Annette Focks.

Annette Focks, born in Lower Saxony in 1964, is one of Germany's most renowned musicians and composers. She has composed the music for numerous film and television productions, which have won numerous national and international awards. After studying music at the Cologne University of Music, Focks, twice a scholarship holder of the European Biennial for Music, initially worked as a musician. She then studied composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, graduating in 1998 with a diploma in composition for film and television. In addition to her work as a film composer, she creates works for orchestra and chamber music ensemble, working with various orchestras such as the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as internationally successful musicians such as Frederick Köster, Andi Reisner, Sreten Krstić, Ferran Cruixent and Anja Lechner.

Fock's musical compositions range from classical orchestral compositions to modern, electronic film music and have earned her numerous nominations and awards. She composed the film music for Chris Kraus' films, including “Four Minutes”, for which she was awarded the Grand Prix spécial du Jury at the 8e Festival International Musique & Cinema D'Auxerre. She was nominated for the European Film Award (FOUR MINUTES) and the German Film Award Lola (RUNAWAY HORSE by Rainer Kaufmann and KRABAT by Marco Kreuzpaintner). In 2010, she received the award for “Best Film Music” from the Teatro Politeama di Catanzaro for the score of POLL by Chris Kraus. She worked with Danish director Bille August on his films NIGHT TRAIN TO LISSABON, THE HIDDEN SOLDIER and 55 STEPS. She wrote the music for JOHN RABE by Florian Gallenberger, for THREE QUARTER MOON by Christian Zübert, for the WINDSTORM series by Katja von Garnier and for the THE WILD CHICKS based on the children's books by Cornelia Funke.

She is responsible for over 150 musical scores and film compositions for national and international cinema and television productions. In 2013, she received the Gema-Authors' Prize for her compositions. Her work has also earned her two awards and a nomination for the German Television Award. In 2022, she was once again awarded the German Film Award Lola in the category of Best Film Score for WUNDERSCHÖN, directed by Karoline Herfurth.

Since 2019, Annette Focks has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which annually awards the Oscars, as well as a member of both the European and German Film Academies.
