Cultural diversity: Three feature-length films and one short film from Africa

The 58th Hof International Film Festival is opening on October 22, 2024. We are delighted to present four productions and co-productions from Africa and are welcoming the filmmakers. This is an important step in acknowledging the cultural diversity and cinematic creativity of this continent. Feature films as well as documentaries from Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya will be screened, highlighting complex social and political issues. The films are about belonging, anger, hope and decisions. Experiences that are both stirring and moving.

THE LEGEND OF THE VAGABOND QUEEN OF LAGOS, Regie: The Agbajowo Collective, Nigeria 2024

The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos is a social film that tells the story of a young mother from a poor neighborhood in Lagos. By chance, she learns that luxury apartments are to be built on the very spot where her community lives, financed with a large amount of money from corruption. She wants to take a stand against this and in doing so transforms herself from an originally isolated individualist to a unifying force in the community whose existence is at stake.

The film was written and directed by seven film professionals and storytellers, some of whom come from the slums and the community where the evictions took place in 2016 and 2017. “The film is an act of resistance against the ongoing forced evictions threatening the docklands of Lagos. It is a call for solidarity among slum dwellers and marginalized communities worldwide.” - The Agbajowo Collective
