A decade after experiencing violence as a teenager, Sabrina from Detroit decides to confront her past. The family portrait restoration accompanies her and her closest relatives during this process.

“I remember well the first time we met. As part of a filming trip [...] we came to Detroit. Sabrina's father [...] told us about his daughter [...] and soon after, we met Sabrina for the first time. [...]
A short time later, a collaboration with Sabrina began that lasted five years and resulted in the now-completed film RESTORATION. The narration of the film was created in close exchange between Sabrina and me. [...]
For me personally, the fascination of the concept of trauma confrontation and the so-called ‘site visits’ is the social value that can be developed from there, beyond the fate of the individual. In the course of my research [...] I encountered many aggrieved persons who benefited from this confrontation and were freed from their symptoms of illness. [...]
The story of Sabrina Banks and her family is set in Detroit. Consciously dealing with the history of American racism as well as the dangers of a white, European view of it was a basic prerequisite for me in making this film. It was important to me and Sabrina to jointly make a film that is informed by our feminist beliefs in order to offer a bridge to other aggrieved people. [...]”
