Carla has run away from home with big plans; she intends to go to Lyon to study fashion. At the train station, everything she owns is stolen, leaving her completely destitute. She is forced to stick with Rico, who picks her up and enables her to earn money at his construction site so that she can move on. Lucie lives with her brother Michael on the same construction site, a boat that is being converted into a pub. This is her world, her home, and she wants to stay here.
Fate seems to have brought together Lucie and Carla with their contrasting plans. Carla sees in Lucie what it is like to have a firm place in life, while Carla opens up a new, bigger world for Lucie.
When Carla discovers she is pregnant shortly before continuing on her journey, her dream seems to have been totally shattered – it is already too late for an abortion. Carla cannot go to a doctor, anyway, as she is insured through her father. Lucie, who desperately wants Carla to stay, proposes a deal: “You have the baby under my name, and I'll take it.” Carla agrees. But then Carla finds it impossible to leave her baby.
