Montreal in the early 1960s: 13-year-old tomboy Hanna returns home from a holiday with her grandparents, only to face the challenges of growing up and the realities of her family life.
Her displaced Jewish father is failing in his attempts to make a living as a writer, and her fragile mother is perpetually overworked. Hanna finds solace and connection with her brother and her teacher, who reminds her of her idol, actress Anna Karina, in Jean-Luc Godard’s Vivre sa vie, a film about the downfall of a Parisian woman into prostitution. Caught between fiction and reality, Hanna must realize that freedom requires choices, choices only she alone can make. Like Anna Karina’s spellbinding portrayal of Nana in Godard’s film, she is free, but above all responsible for… living her life.
