In the near future: Sunny and Ray spend a digital detox weekend in a remote cabin before they plan to have microchips implanted, the very chips that have replaced almost all smartphones. But a gigantic solar flare wipes out all electronics on Earth and has unforeseen consequences for everyone with implants. Nothing is as used to be.

“The end of our civilization – or of humanity itself – was already made clear to me in my childhood through the horrors of the Third Reich, the ongoing Cold War, and Chernobyl. Because I grew up near a lignite strip mine, destruction was part of my everyday life and later became the subject of most of my scientific and artistic work. All of these threats have one thing in common: they are all created and enabled by humans and are supposedly under control. Especially in today’s world, where we are surrounded by dangers such as the climate tipping point, nuclear armament, pandemics, etc. – all of which are man-made – we forget that we are merely insignificant specks in the universe, and that there are forces at play which far exceed not only our control, but also our imagination. My film SUNNY not only questions our dependence on technology, but also explores the meaning of trust, emancipation, and diversity in a world that is going off the rails.“
