WHERE THE WAVES TOOK HER – Now in cinemas

WHERE THE WAVES TOOK HER - Still 4

Since Thursday, September 3, 2026, Jana Stalleins’ powerful documentary WHERE THE WAVES TOOK HER (59th Hof International Film Festival 2025 / Distributor: UCM.ONE) has been screening in cinemas across Germany.

Celebrated by audiences and juries alike, the film received an Honourable Mention as part of the presentation of the GRANIT – Hof Documentary Film Award at the 59th International Hof Film Festival. In 2026, it was also honoured with the SI STAR Emerging Director Award at the 76th Berlinale.

For many people, the Mediterranean represents a final chance for hope – and at the same time, the world’s most dangerous escape route. More and more women and children are attempting the crossing, risking everything in search of safety.

WHERE THE WAVES TOOK HER follows midwife Anne-Katrin on her very first mission aboard a sea rescue vessel. Amid fear, hope and uncertainty, she becomes part of a remarkable team of women working at sea to save lives. The film gives refugee women the space to tell their own stories – with dignity, strength and in their own words.

Raw, intimate and deeply moving, WHERE THE WAVES TOOK HER brings the physical reality of rescue at sea remarkably close. You can feel the waves. You can feel the tension. You can feel the humanity.

An experience that unfolds with extraordinary force on the big screen. A film to be seen in cinemas.
