German Cinema New Talent Award

The German Cinema New Talent Award for Best Film is endowed with 10,000 euros and awarded by Bavaria Film, Bayerischer Rundfunk and the DZ Bank. The prize is awarded to filmmakers for their first, second or third German-produced feature film with a minimum length of 79 minutes which premieres in the program of the Hof International Film Festival. An independent jury selects the winners.

Luzie Loose, Jury German Cinema New Talent Award 2024

Luzie Loose

Luzie Loose is a director and screenwriter. She studied at the Berlin University of the Arts and is a directing graduate of the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and of La Fémis in Paris. She realized short films and video art, which were presented at festivals worldwide, e.g. in San Sebastian, SXSW or at the Munich Film Festival. Her debut film SCHWIMMEN celebrated success at national and international film festivals and won the HoF Gold Prize for Best Director in 2018. Since then, she has directed Tatort and the hit series DRUCK, among others, and is dedicated to developing new movie material and series formats as an author. Most recently, she created, wrote and directed the series EVERYONE IS FUCKING CRAZY. Luzie Loose lives and works in Berlin.

Katrin Schlösser

Born in Leipzig. Studied production at the Konrad Wolf Academy of Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Founded Ö-Filmproduktion in 1990. Producer of feature and documentary films (www.oefilm.de). 2007 to 2022 Professor of Creative Film and Television Production at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. Debut as director “Szenen meiner Ehe” 2019. “Besuch im Bubenland” 2024 (Hof International Film Festival 2024).

Johanna Wokalek, Jury German Cinema New Talent Award 2024

Johanna Wokalek

Johanna Wokalek is one of the most renowned German theater and film actresses. She studied at the Max Reinhart Seminar and was a permanent member of the Burgtheater ensemble from 2000 to 2015 under directors such as Andrea Breth, Luc Bondy, Peter Zadek and Thomas Vinterberg. She had her breakthrough on the big screen in 2003 with HIERANKL (Bavarian Film Award, Grimme Award). This was followed by a number of highly acclaimed cinema projects, including NORDWAND, DER BAADER MEINHOF KOMPLEX (Bambi, German Film Award nomination) and DIE DEUTSCHSTUNDE. In 2021, she was once again honored with the Bavarian Film Award for her performance in the comedy BECKENRANDSHERIFF. She was last seen in SISI UND ICH in theaters. Since 2014, Wokalek has also played roles in various operas such as “Charlotte Salomon” and “A Quiet Place” at the Opéra Garnier in Paris. She also performed “Ich hab die Nacht geträumet” at the Berliner Ensemble under the direction of Andrea Breth. In fall 2024, she will premiere “Method” at the Volksbühne Berlin and be seen in competition with THE EXALTED at the Black Nights Film Festival in Talinn. Since 2023, she appears as investigator Chris Blohm in Munich's “Polizeiruf 110”.

The prize itself is an object from the State Technical College for Product Design in Selb and is dedicated to persons closely connected to Hof and the festival. The awardees are generally not represented with a film in the official festival program during the year the award is presented.

Nadeshda Brennicke, Short Film Jury Award of the City of Hof 2024

Nadeshda Brennicke

Nadeshda Brennicke’s career began with the leading role "Tina" in MANTA, THE FILM (1991). She appeared in Christian Petzold’s directorial debut PILOTINNEN and played the lead role "Jenny" in Dominik Graf’s HOTTE IM PARADIES. In 2013, Nadeshda Brennicke played Germany’s first female bank robber, Gisela Werler, in the feature film BANKLADY. She has won several international awards for her performance, including Best Actress at the Chicago International Film Festival.

Sebastian Höglinger, born 1983 in Linz, studied theater, film and media sciences and gained many years of experience in the organization and implementation of cultural events. Curatorial and journalistic activities as well as cultural policy consulting at home and abroad. Employee of sixpackfilm Filmdistribution. From 2015 to 2023 Artistic Director and Managing Director of Diagonale - Festival of Austrian Film in Graz, together with Peter Schernhuber.

Michael Orth

Michael Orth founded the Landshut Short Film Festival in 2000 and became its artistic director. In 2014, he was a founding member of the VBFF - Verband Bayerischer Filmfestivals e.V. and has been on the board ever since.

The Friedrich Baur Gold Award is presented for the best direction in a first feature film by the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in memoriam Heinz Badewitz. The prize consists of a certified gold bar worth around 35,000 euros. In addition, the prize includes artistic advice for the development of a new film project over a period of one year. This year's mentor for the Gold Award is Hans Steinbichler, director and writer.

Hans Steinbichler was born in Solothurn, Switzerland, and grew up near Lake Chiemsee, Bavaria, Germany. His feature film debut, HIERANKL, which was his graduation film from the HFF Munich, received numerous awards, including the German Cinema Talent Award in 2003 and the Bavarian Film Award as well as the Grimme Award in Gold for writing and directing. His second feature film, WINTERS JOURNEY, was the opening film at the Munich Film Festival in 2006 and was nominated for the German Film Award for "Best Film." Josef Bierbichler won the Lola for "Best Actor" for his role in the film. In 2008, he again received the Grimme Award for directing DIE ZWEITE FRAU, featuring Matthias Brandt and Monika Bleibtreu (the official German entry in Toronto). In March 2016 the film THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK premiered at the Berlinale and was released in cinemas on March 3, 2016. For this work, Steinbichler received the German Directing Award Metropolis in November 2016. In October 2016, THE UNHEARD WOMAN was released in the theaters, starring Rosalie Thomass in the lead role, and was awarded the One Future Prize at the Munich Film Festival, later then the film also won the German Television Award 2018 for Best Fiction Program and the Grimme Award 2018. From 2020 to 2021, Hans Steinbichler directed the third season of DAS BOOT in collaboration with Dennis Gansel in Prague and Malta for Sky/Bavaria. Steinbichler and Gansel were nominated for the DAfFNE 2022 for this work. In 2022/2023, he directed the adaptation of the novel A WHOLE LIFE by Robert Seethaler which was a major box office success and received multiple nominations for German and Austrian film awards. It tells the story of a simple worker’s life in the Alps and spans an entire era in which the Alps transformed from terra incognita to the playground of Europe. In 2016, Hans Steinbichler was appointed as a regular member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts.

Granit Hof Documentary Award

The Hermann and Bertl Müller Foundation, which is based in Hof, has been awarding the prize, endowed with 7,500 euros, since 2015 for the best feature-length documentary film from German, Swiss or Austrian production. The prize is designed in cooperation with the European Training Centre for Stonemasonry and Stone Sculpting in Wunsiedel according to a design by Mohamed Naguib. The Egyptian is an award-winning sculptor and lecturer at the University of Alexandria.

Elena Alvarez

Since 2007 she has worked as an author for the political satirical program quer, the cultural program Capriccio (Bayerischer Rundfunk) and ttt. Between 2011 and 2013 lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, Aesthetic Theory. Her film “Hunter from Elsewhere - a Journey with Helen Britton” was released last March by W-Film. She works as a freelance filmmaker and producer across genres between fiction, essayistic and documentary. Lives in Munich and Málaga.

Leonhard Hofmann

Leonhard Hofmann is a director and film author. His short film DREI BÄUME SIND KEIN WALD was shown at numerous renowned festivals and was shortlisted for the German Short Film Award. His first feature-length documentary FRANK MEYER celebrated its world premiere in Thessaloniki, won the Granit Documentary Film Award in Hof and the Audience Award at the Lichter Filmfest. He is currently completing his master's degree in feature film directing at the Babelsberg Film University.

Linda Söffker, Jury GRANIT Hof Documentary Award 2024

Linda Söffker

Curator, author and moderator. Since 2022 editor of the Leuchtkraft Journal and scientific advisor at the DEFA Foundation. From 2010 to 2022, she was responsible for the "Perspektive Deutsches Kino" section of the Berlin International Film Festival.

The Bild-Kunst Award for Best Costume Design and Best Set Design was founded in 1997 as an award for the best production design by the "Film and Television Production Design" course at the HFF Munich. In 2010, the award was expanded to include the prize for "Best Costume Design", awarded by the Association of Professional Groups for Production Design and Costume Design (VSK). In addition, the Kulturwerk Foundation of VG BILD-KUNST was acquired as the main sponsor. Since then, the two prizes have been endowed with € 2,500 each.

Christian Pogatetz studied English and American Studies at the University of Graz and Theater, Film and Media Studies at the University of Vienna. He worked and helped design the program at Leslie Open, an open-air cinema in Graz. He works as a freelance writer for the Kleine Zeitung and has been a film critic for UNCUT-Movies - Das Online Kinomagazin since 2015. He lives in Graz.

Sarah Stutte

Sarah Stutte is a freelance film journalist. She publishes texts in the NZZ am Sonntag and Weltwoche Magazin, as well as regularly in numerous print and online magazines in Switzerland and Germany, such as Deadline Filmmagazin, kino-zeit.de, Filmbulletin, Cinema Jahrbuch and cineman.ch. Verena Gräfe-Höft

Verena Gräfe-Höft is a Hamburg-based producer and founder and CEO of JUNAFILM. Before studying film at the Hamburg Media School (HMS), she worked as a freelance journalist for various radio and TV stations. After graduating from film school, she founded her own production company JUNAFILM in Hamburg in 2009. Verena Gräfe-Höft is a member of the EAVE Producer Network and ACE Producers, alumna of the European TV Drama Labs. In 2017, she was selected by German Films to represent Germany in Cannes as “Producer on the Move”. For PELIKANBLUT she won the Producer Award in the category “German Cinema Production” at Filmfest Hamburg in 2019 and was selected to participate in the renowned international leadership program “Inside Pictures” in the same year. She is an alumni speaker and on the advisory board of the Hamburg Media School's film studies program and teaches seminars at the HMS and HfBK. She has been a guest at numerous panel discussions and supports young filmmakers as part of various mentorship programs. Verena Gräfe-Höft is also co-founder and representative of WIFT Hamburg (Women in Film & Television).

Constanze Guttmann

Constanze Guttmann studied production and media management at the HFF Munich from 2006 to 2010, during and after her studies she worked as Bernd Eichinger's personal assistant. From 2011 to 2015, she was in charge of project development for international and German in-house and co-productions and German distribution titles at Constantin Film. From 2015, she realized feature films and series for Constantin Film and Constantin Television, first as a producer and then as a producer. Her projects as a producer include TIMM THALTER ODER DAS VERKAUFTE LACHEN and TIGERMILCH (both 2017). As a producer, she was responsible for TIDE (2021), HOME SWEET HOME - WO DAS BÖDE WOHNT, HAUS AUS GLAS (both 2022), among others. Joseph M'Barek

Joseph M'Barek, born in Munich in 1986, studied film production at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy in Ludwigsburg until 2011. He then worked as a producer for various Munich production companies such as Odeon Entertainment, Die Film GmbH and Sam Film GmbH. In his subsequent work as a producer for ARRI Productions, he co-produced films such as DIE KÄNGURU CHRONIKEN, TRAUMFABRIK and the German Film Award-winning CURVEBALL. Joseph M'Barek has been working for STUDIOCANAL Germany since 2020, developing and producing material for the German and international cinema and series market. His current projects include the co-production STILLER by Stefan Haupt with Albrecht Schuch and Paula Beer in the leading roles.
